SUMMARY:John T. Eiseman - MENTORED PLEIN AIR EXPERIENCE
DESCRIPTION:Paint alongside. Learn deeply. See differently.\nMay 12\, 13 & 14\, 2026 \nWith decades of experience as a professional artist and a distinguished history in plein air painting\, award-winning painter John T. Eiseman offers a rare opportunity to engage in a mentored\, immersive plein air experience. A graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art (Magna Cum Laude\, 1981)\, John has painted since his teens\, earned numerous awards\, and been featured in major national exhibitions.. \nThis experience begins with one demonstration by John\, setting the tone and shared visual language for the days ahead. From there\, the focus shifts away from formal instruction and toward painting alongside the mentor—working on location together in an environment that encourages observation\, experimentation\, and personal growth. \nOver three full plein air sessions across two days (morning and afternoon)\, participants will develop multiple paintings while receiving individualized guidance. John works one-on-one with each artist\, meeting them at their current level and responding to their specific needs\, questions\, and goals. Rather than prescribing a single approach\, he helps artists learn how to truly look\, how to translate observation into mark-making\, value\, and color—and how to tell their own unique story through painting. \nThe experience concludes on Thursday morning with a gallery talk and group critique\, offering thoughtful feedback and introducing the shared language of art in a supportive\, conversational setting. \nDesigned for both beginning and advanced painters\, this mentored experience invites artists to bring their own plein air setup and preferred media. The emphasis is not on producing finished works\, but on deepening perception\, strengthening visual confidence\, and developing an authentic artistic voice. \n ” Painting is not just the celebration of vision but\, rather a quest for experience. In this sense\, my painting is not a recording of facts seen. It is the process of interpreting a fleeting muse.” \nMay 12\, 13 & 14\, 2026\nFULL TUITION – $300\nTerms & Conditions of NC Plein Air Workshops \n\nFOR MORE DETAILS OF WORKSHOP

This evolved into a fascination of painting with the immediacy and expressive opportunities of watercolor. Today\, he quickly captures the essence and mood of street and landscape scenes with a bold\, impressionistic approach. \nMoving to a downtown Minneapolis condo in early 2020 facilitated his love of Plein Air\, riding his scooter exploring and painting street scenes. He has combined his love of travel and painting by entering Plein Air competitions around the country\, winning numerous awards along the way.

SUMMARY:Gallery Talk with the Pros - How to Look at Art with John T. Eiseman
DESCRIPTION:🎨 Gallery Talk – “How to Look at Art”\nEvent: Gallery Walk & Interactive TalkDate: Thursday\, May 14\, 2026Location: New Bern\, North CarolinaVenue: Festival Gallery / Exhibition Space/New Bern Farmer’s Market \nSpeaker: John T. Eiseman(Also leading a mentored plein air experience during the festival) \n\n“How to Look at Art”A deep-dive\, audience-participation conversation exploring how we see and understand painting. \n\n👁️ What to expect\nThis is not a lecture—it’s a guided conversation that unfolds in front of the artwork itself. \nKey ideas explored: \n\nDifferent artistic “voices” and interpretations\nHow two artists can see the same subject completely differently\nPrinciples of design and composition\nValue relationships and structure\nColor choices and harmony\nMark-making and expressive technique\n\n\n💬 Format & Approach\n\nOpen-ended gallery walk discussion\nAudience participation encouraged\nReal-time exploration of paintings on display\nFocus on understanding\, not critique\n\nYou might compare how two artists—say\, painting the same sailboat—arrive at entirely different yet equally valid visual interpretations. The goal is to sharpen your ability to truly see what’s happening in a painting. \n\n🌟 Why attend\nThis session is about building a deeper connection with art—learning not just to look\, but to understand\, interpret\, and appreciate the decisions behind what you see. \nExplore all the Daily Topics of the Series\nThis is your chance to ask questions to last year’s top award winners and jurors: \n• How are artists chosen?\n• What criteria are considered by the selection jurors in reviewing applications?\n• What award selection criteria does the award judge use?\n• How does the organization decide on the featured artists for their selection process?\n• How do award winners prepare themselves for competitions?\n• What do artists look for when they first visit the communities they’re going to paint?\n• What personal obstacles do artists overcome to produce their best work within the event guidelines?\n• What do artists look for when choosing three competition paintings?\n• What should people consider when building their own collections?\n• How does an artist decide what they want to paint? \nNC Plein Air Team Leaders and past award winners will be answering these and other questions daily from noon to 1 p.m. at the Exhibition Gallery.

She immediately was hooked and painted on location everyday for fifteen months straight\, even in the 100º days of August in Savannah. She feels she grew the most and her true personal style emerged during those hard-worked days. There is a romantic storytelling quality to her work that is loved by her collectors. She’s won numerous “Best of Shows”\, as well as taught\, judged and demonstrated for many plein air events.

SUMMARY:Russell Jewell - INSTRUCTIONAL WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP
DESCRIPTION:Seeing Light Before You Paint\nMay 17\, 18\, 19\, 2026 \nThis watercolor workshop is designed to give participants more than technical instruction—it provides multiple ways of thinking\, seeing\, and problem-solving that can be directly applied to capturing light in watercolor landscape painting. This workshop is for all genres and not just for plein air\, all classes will be held in classroom setting. \nRussell Jewell teaches painters how to see into the future of their painting before they paint it. By learning to visualize the intended outcome—the “target painting”—participants gain the confidence to commit to strong decisions and paint with purpose rather than hesitation. \nRussell’s primary medium is watercolor\, but his teaching methods are grounded in his doctorate in art education and more than 35 years of experience teaching art. His approach blends visual analysis\, physical application\, and mental clarity\, helping artists better understand why a painting succeeds—and how to make it happen intentionally.. \nAbout the Instructor\nRussell Jewell is a nationally recognized watercolor painter and educator.
