Through experiencing the natural world outdoors; I’m intent on painting the color, space, and abstracted shapes combined with composition, to create mood and excitement in the painting and the process. Painting in the traditions of outdoor painters of the early New England Plein Air Painters of Old Lyme, CT, and Rockport, MA, I paint on location most of the time. Painting en plein air, or, painting out of doors, allows me the chance to capture a bit o’ the life in the constantly changing light and atmospheric conditions.”

Plein Air painting is exciting to me as a painter, since I love being outside in the natural light and creating that same feeling of the place in my painting. In essence, working to create that same sense of presence for the viewer, is part of my challenge and enjoyment in painting.

Biography

Acquiring a varied resume over the years; with many painting shows to my credit; including Plein Air Competitions, National and Regional juried shows, and Invitational Shows over the past 22 years of working as a professional artist, has been quite the adventure. I enjoy painting plein air because of the light and the atmosphere which are my stepping off point in nearly every painting. Being outside in the natural changing conditions, is really the tie that binds me to the pursuit of painting. It’s very exciting to respond to an immediate environment using the painting vehicle to depict that experience and share it with others.

I’ve studied drawing and oil painting with a varied crew of professional painters, including Bernard McTigue, Michael Graves, John Traynor, Kenn Erroll Backhaus and others. Having earned a BFA in design, I’m very happy to work as a professional painter, designing my own paintings, at my easel. I’ve been enjoying elected membership in some highly regarded historic art associations; such as Rockport and North Shore Art Associations, as well as The Lyme Art Association. I was voted signature artist with Hudson Valley Art Association and invited member to New Haven Paint and Clay Club, Springfield Academic Artists and Connecticut Academy of Fine Artists.

My main interest is in the field of Plein Air painting and I find myself traveling extensively to juried and invitational events throughout the year. Some Events include painting in Colorado for the Telluride Plein Air 2015 and Easton Plein Air 2015; both of which are heralded top venues in the USA. Internationally I’ve participated in Art in the Open: a juried plein air event held in Wexford, Ireland, which has achieved a large following over the years. In that event I was awarded a top award. Recently I was awarded the top award in Connecticut Plein Air Painters Annual Show, By jurist Don Demers and again with juror Mark Boedges.

My gallery representation includes The Argosy Gallery in Bar Harbor, Maine, for the last 14 years.
