SMITH Head Shot

Larry Smith

My father (the vet) wanted me to be a veterinarian. I loved English Setters, and tolerated Poodles with ribbons in their hair… but my heart wanted to be an artist. In college, I tried vet medicine but eventually landed in Graphic Design. I spent 30 years of work in advertising as an art director and an owner of my own advertising agency. After raising three kids and three English Setters, I left the advertising business and began dating my first love… Art. In 1990 I became a full-time oil painter, traveling throughout the Southeast doing about 20 juried outdoor art shows a year. In the last six years I have been spending as much time as I can, painting outside, where everything is more exciting.

Biography

My father (the vet) wanted me to be a veterinarian. I loved English Setters, and tolerated Poodles with ribbons in their hair… but my heart wanted to be an artist. In college, I tried vet medicine but eventually landed in Graphic Design. Along the way, I took as many painting classes as the fine art majors did. During college, I met and married my soul mate. I begin 30 years of work in advertising as an art director and an owner of my own advertising agency. After raising three kids and having three English Setters, I left the advertising business and began dating my first love… Art. In 1990 I became a full-time oil painter. I have traveled throughout the Southeast doing about 20 juried outdoor art shows a year. I have won numerous awards for my paintings. My wife, Pam is a portrait artist. Together we had “2 Smith” Art Gallery in Duluth, GA. We also started and ran Duluth Plein Air for six years in Duluth, GA. I prefer to work with oil on stretched canvas. “I see things in unexpected color and energy.” ”I love the impressionist artists, especially Van Gogh, Monet and Cezanne.” My work has a strong following of art patrons throughout the United States including: Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, New Jersey, South Carolina, Texas, and Virginia. For inquiries about original art, portrait or commissioned work simply e-mail or call. To see the newest additions to the collection, call to schedule a tour of Larry’s studio/gallery located in Peachtree Corners, Georgia. Or to share a cup of coffee, talk about the meaning of life, the art of art, or simply to smell the paint and see new works in progress, call or e-mail Larry.

Artist Statement

My “Briar Patch” is a stimulating location, paint brushes, canvases, palette knives, bug spray and a sturdy easel. I introduce them to tubes of colors longing to be set free. This is my “Happy Place” where I can explore beyond what is there. I baptize the entire canvas with a warm color. Then begin to bring it to life with large brushes, and darker paint, to yield simple shapes and values. Soon thick strokes of color begin to overtake the canvas, and I am tempted to give my palette knives and fingers permission to join in on the fun.
