Cityscapes have been my focus for years, but I started with painting landscapes outdoors and also Still Life paintings. I have studied in workshops with David Leffel, Ken Auster, and John Budicin.

Biography

PAUL WOLVEN

The cityscape is what Paul is best known for as a painter, and he continues to be fascinated with it because, as he says, “The city-scene offers the artist many opportunities for expression: dynamic energy in movement of people and vehicles, play of dramatic lights and darks, and the beauty and achievement visible in architecture.” Collectors often describe his citycapes as “mysterious”. Paul pursues all subject matter, including landscape and still-life.

His reasons for painting have changed over time: “At first it was just a desire to render what Nature had to offer, but the importance of Art now seems much more profound to me. Appreciating beauty is, in my opinion, one of our most important tasks. What do we conclude when we observe the majesty, complexity, delicacy, power, of what is seen in the world around us? The night sky with thousand of visible stars. Rivers, lakes, Mt. Everest, the incredible colors of birds or fish, dolphins at play in the ocean-what do we imagine is behind all of this? In the book of Romans, it says “For all that may be known of God by men lies plain before their eyes; …His attributes…have been visible, ever since the world began…in the things he has made” (Romans 1: 19,20). If the artist helps others to respond more deeply to the world around them, then that is a worthwhile goal for me.”

Paul took art classes at the University of Cincinnati while majoring in English Literature. After graduating, the need to create art drew Paul to evening painting classes at the Art Academy of Cincinnati. Other classes attended have included workshops with teachers such as David Leffel and Ken Auster. Maintaining a studio in the Pendlton Art Center in Cincinnati, which provides space to 200 artists, for over 12 years, Paul has won numerous awards for paintings entered into competitions, including the Behringer-Crawford Museum’s FrestArt competition, Covington, KY. Gallery representation includes Greenwich House Gallery, 2124 Madison Rd., Cincinnati, OH.

Artist Statement

There’s nothing like painting plein air! Much more comes to my eye compared to using a photo reference. Also, time limitations result in a painting which gives a quick impression, which is refreshing. Most recently, I got Honorable Mention at the Mariemont Paint Out in Cincinnati. My work is in numerous corporate collections in the Cincinnati area.
